A tub (1) supports a large round bale (19). Rotation of a drum (3) (provided with cutting blades, not shown) feeds cut portions of the bale over the top of the drum and out through a side wall (5). A roller (6) acts as a deflector to limit the amount of cut fodder which tends to be thrown upwards. If the torque of the drum (3) increases due to an excess amount of fodder being fed, a lever (14) rotates and operates a spool valve (17) which controls operation of a piston and cylinder device (18). This in turn controls the position of an arm (9) carrying the roller (6) and brings the roller down on to the bale (19), thus pushing the bale away from the drum (3). Once the pressure on the drum (3) is relieved, the spool valve (17) closes again and the roller (6) returns to its normal position at a controlled slow speed so that the bale is reintroduced slowly to the drum.
|
