In a lathe, a wedge (7) is mounted on the circumferential surface of the housing (1) of the drum tool holder. The wedge (7) slopes at a shallow angle towards the spur tooth system (3) of the drum tool holder but has a steep flank (9) on the side remote from the spur tooth system (3). An acoustic pick-up (10) is arranged on the flank (9). The acoustic pick-up (10) picks up the longitudinal vibration portion of the vibration produced by the respective tool (5, 6) and feeds a corresponding voltage signal to an analysing unit. <IMAGE>
