The invention relates to an apparatus, a process and a use of an irradiation apparatus for fluid media laden with chemical compounds. The equipment comprises a reaction space 1 and an extraction chamber 7 having solid or liquid materials 8, such as activated charcoals or solvents, which contain substances which can be converted into the fluid phase. These substances are desorbed from the materials with the aid of the flushing medium and fed to the irradiation space 1. The apparatus and the process according to the invention are particularly suitable for converting the compounds contained in sorption materials, in particular undesired pollutants such as halogenated hydrocarbons, into less hazardous or harmless substances by photochemical processes.
