A contour measurement system employing laser (36) and spinning mirror (30) to generate a scanning beam (38). Scanning beam (38) moves along object (40) to generate a scanning line from P to Q comprised of a series of reflection points (41). The reflected image of scanning line P-Q is focused by lens system (39) in camera (19) onto light channeling surface (21). Light channeling surface (21) is comprised of a series of a light reflection receiving points (26) for receiving the reflected image of scanning line P-Q from object (40). For instance, as scanning beam (38) strikes reflection point P on object (40), camera (19) focuses the reflected image of that illuminated point P on receiving point P' of light channeling surface (21). The actual height of point P with respect to one or more reference surface heights is then determined from a stored look up table which contains the times of arrival of light reflected at point P from those reference surface heights to point P1. The angle of the scanning beam (38) is determined by the rotating speed of mirror (30) and by starting a timer when scanning beam (38) passes a start sensor (34). |
