The system according to the invention, which is for interior decoration or shop fitting, makes it possible quickly and with no tools to assemble numbers of components which are delivered flat into series of shelves, which shelves may be set at variable intervals and ensure their own stability through being supported by a wall. The system according to the invention is characterised by: - vertical uprights 1 supported by a wall and comprising a groove on their front face for the longitudinal guidance (e.g. by dovetail means) of distance pieces 2. Each upright 1 rests on the floor via an intermediate foot distance piece 4 to which it is fixed and whose point of support furthest from the wall creates a moment which tends to press this upright 1 against the wall, thereby stabilising the unit without any fastening device; - distance pieces 2 which slide in this groove and stack on top of each other to support the shelves 3 and thus define the intervals between them; and - shelves 3 which are held between these distance pieces 2. <IMAGE>
