<p>PURPOSE: To enhance the reliability of actuation by forcibly opening flaps hinged to the long sides of a container so that the cushion can be deployed laterally, when an inflating cushion is stopped from deploying in front of the container along a predetermined path. CONSTITUTION: The subject restraint system includes an inflation means 38, a box-shaped container 54, a freely inflatable occupant restraint cushion 42 folded and stored therein, and separable means 80-84 provided on the walls 72-76 of the container 54 to define a first pair of integrally hinged flaps 88. In this case, the separable means 80-84 are formed to define a second pair of integrally hinged flaps 86. When the inflating cushion 42 is stopped from deploying in front of the container 54 along a predetermined path, the flaps 86 are forcibly separated from the container 54 by the inflation of the cushion 42, and the cushion 42 can be deployed in lateral direction of the container 54.</p> |
