Staple fibre yarn is produced by imparting twist to thread material (2) in two stages by means of a drawing frame, a centrifugal spindle (6) and a spooling unit. During the first stage a fibre strand passes from feed point (1) to spindle (6) to be partly spun. During the second stage the partly spun thread is withdrawn from the spindle which continues to rotate thereby completing the spinning process and the thread is wound up on a spool. At the changeover from first to second stage a roller (4) is moved to clamp the strand against a roller (3), the rollers rotating to withdraw the strand from the spindle. Because the twist no longer runs back to feed point (1) the strand ruptures and the end from the spindle is taken in by a nozzle (10) for subsequent feeding to the spooling means. <IMAGE>
