The apparatus has a circuit (2,3,26,17,24) for converting a carrier chrominance signal to a low-band converted chrominance signal which is in a low frequency band. on reproduction, a circuit (27,16,13) reconverts the low band signal to the carrier chrominance signal of the orginal colour subcarrier frequency. A circuit (40-43) detects the burst in the carrier chrominance signal for level adjustment of the chrominance signal, control of the conversion frequency or for discrimination of the black and white signal. Level phase and synchronous detection are carried out after demodulating the low-band converted chrominance signal into two colour difference signals in the base band, and A/D converter and digital circuits are used.
