The conveyor includes two fixed parallel guide elements 9, 10 along which are guided idler rollers 7, 8 equipping a carrying carriage 1 interacting with a chain drive device 18. According to the invention, the drive device includes a plurality of motorised endless chains 18 which are aligned parallel to the guide elements 8, 9 and are in engagement with at least one coupling sprocket 32, 33 mounted so as to rotate about an axle 35, 53 of the carriage and connected to a fixed part of the said carriage by a friction means 44 whose resistance is greater than the threshold beyond which the transmission of movement to the loaded carriage takes place without slip. <IMAGE>
