The harvested plants are at first roughly chopped and conveyed to a finishing unit comprising two horizontally positioned conditioning drums (8) arranged opposite each other. The distance between them can be adjusted to the consistency of the processed matter. The surfaces of the drums (8, 29) are covered with two differently shaped sets of helical grooves (23) guided in opposite directions. Each of the grooves (20, 21) forms an intersection with each of the complementary grooves (20, 21), resulting in the creation of a multitude of specifically shaped pointed projections (20a, 21a).
