A remote latching mechanism comprises connecting member, preferably a cylindrical rod (50), an actuator assembly (20) for rotating the connecting member about its longitudinal axis, and a latch assembly (60) connected to the connecting member (50) for movement between latched and unlatched conditions in response to the rotation of the connecting member (50). The latch assembly (60) comprises a crank (72), at least one link member (80) having over-center action, a pawl support (86) and a pawl (94), all inter-connected so that upon rotation of the crank (72), the pawl (94) is pivoted and slid relative to a latch housing (62) between latched and unlatched positions. The actuator assembly (20) comprises an actuator fixedly connected to the connecting member (50). In one embodiment, the actuator comprises a pivotable handle (32). In the other embodiments, the actuator comprises a substantially cylindrical member (52, 232, 260, 452) to which torque is applied by a tool (270) or a lever (400) to rotate the connecting member. |
