<p>Fumaronitrile in a nitrile solvent in the presence of a base is isomerized to maleonitrile, its geometric isomer. This process is particularly useful for the preparation of maleonitrile by the isomerization of fumaronitrile in acetonitrile in the presence of solid potassium hydroxide. The unreacted fumaronitrile and solvent may be recycled.</p> |
