Method and apparatus for operating a diesel engine with a particulate filter for cleaning the exhaust gas

In diesel engines with a particulate filter for cleaning the exhaust gas, in which the particulates removed from the exhaust gas are burnt on the filter, the temperatures available in the part-load range are frequently too low for combustion of the particulates. As a temperature-increasing measure, which may be combined with other measures known per se, the proposal is to throttle the engine cooling as partial load decreases, although only up to a predeterminable lower part-load value, below which the system is in any case no longer capable of burning particulates. Throttling can be performed in such a way that it is reduced if there is a sudden transition from full load to a low-load range with a simultaneously high engine speed.
