Disclosed is a method for producing an ester or a lactone, which is characterized in that a secondary alcohol represented by the formula (1) below (wherein R^a and R^b respectively represent an organic group, or R^a and R^b may combine with each other to form a ring together with an adjacent carbon atom) is oxidized by a molecular oxygen in the presence of a nitrogen atom-containing cyclic compound which contains a structure represented by the formula (I) below (wherein X represents an oxygen atom or an -OR group (wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or a protecting group of a hydroxyl group)) as a constituent of a ring, and a fluorine atom-containing alcohol and/or a fluorinated sulfonic acid, thereby obtaining a compound represented by the formula (2) below.
