PURPOSE: To ensure superior stability of a silver image without carrying out interim washing after fixation by processing a photographic material with a stabilizing bath contg. specified compds. immediately after fixation. CONSTITUTION: When a silver image formed by exposing, developing and fixing a photographic material including at least one silver halide emulsion layer is stabilized, the photographic material is processed with a stabilizing bath contg. compds. represented by formulae I-III immediately after the fixation. In the formula I, X is Cl or Br, R<1> is H, 1-4C alkyl or 6-10C aryl, R<2> is CHO, COOH, COONa, CH2 COOH, CH2 COONa, CONR<3> 2 or CONHR<3> and R<3> is H or 1-2C alkyl. In the formula III, each of R<3> and R<4> is H, -NH2 , alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkoxy, etc. The silver image is surely stabilized.
