A high-pressure cleaning appliance has a high-pressure pump (1) driven by an internal combustion engine. A bypass line (7) leading from the pressure line (5) of the pump to the suction side (3) of the pump (1) opens when the pressure line (5) is closed. A pressure probe is located (9) in the pressure line (5). In order to adapt the output of the internal combustion engine (2) to the prevailing operating conditions, the pressure probe (9) reduces the speed of the internal combustion engine (2) immediately the pressure in the pressure line (5) falls below a given value.
