Device for installing and immobilising animals to be milked, then releasing them, including a vertical rack 5 with equidistant adjacent cells 8 intended each to receive the head of an animal 9 coming to feed from a trough 11 located at a lower level, each cell 8 being provided with a transverse bolt 10 capable of extending into the cell in order to immobilise the head of the animal. According to the invention, each bolt 10 consists of an element 26 sliding in a guide 25 carried by the rack 5 and located between the said cell and the immediately preceding neighbouring cell, capable of moving with respect to the guide by means of a tilting lever 13, articulated about a spindle 14 actuated by the neck of an animal 9 engaging its head in the cell in order to come to feed from the trough 11, the movement of the head, by tilting the lever, giving rise to the movement of the bolt above the neck, thereby immobilising the head and simultaneously releasing the next cell in which the head of a second animal can then be engaged. <IMAGE>
