Opposed-piston internal combustion engine

To avoid troublesome vibrations, as for instance those which occur in standard Otto engines, the new internal combustion engine operates on the opposed-piston principle. The opposed pistons produce complete mass balancing, giving absolutely smooth running of the engine. Moreover, the pre-compression piston and the two-stroke timing eliminate the need for unnecessary and fault-prone timing mechanisms such as valves and cam shafts. As a result, higher reliability and efficiency of the internal combustion engine is achieved. By virtue of the spherical combustion chambers and the controlled diaphragm in the fresh-air duct, combustion can be optimised in all engine-speed and load ranges, thereby reducing pollutant emissions to the minimum. The main application will be to use the engine to drive passenger vehicles and lorries or commercial vehicles.
