A vascular catheter (10), particularly a dilatation catheter for angioplasty procedures, having bonded onto the surface thereof a durable lubricious coating (17). The coating (17) preferably has two layers (26, 28), a first polymer layer (26) such as polysiloxane comprising a three-dimensional network of polymer units, which is bonded to the catheter surface, and a second lubricious layer (28) such as silicone oil which is bonded to the first layer (26). Substantial reductions in frictional coefficients and effective profiles are obtained.
