The rate of formation of desired 4,4 min -dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone in the product mixture derived from reaction of phenol and sulfuric acid can be increased by use of a catalytically effective amount of a fluoroalkanesulfonic acid, e.g., trifluoromethanesulfonic acid.
