The glass sheet handling apparatus includes a topside platen having a downwardly facing planar surface, defines a first set of passages having lower ends defining a first set of holes in the surface through which a vacuum is drawn to support a heated glass sheet and a second set of passages throgh which pressurized gas is supplied to space the glass sheet from the surface. The apparatus characterized by the bending apparatus including a heating conveyor for conveying glass sheets for heating and delivery to the platen and a mould for receiving the heated glass sheet from the transfer platen for bending, the platen being made of fused silica.
