Dust and impurities are removed from the surface of webs of material such as strips of steel, Cu or Al and paper or film prior to printing, by a rotatable dust removal roller (12). Its outside surface is made of a polymer such as butyl rubber or soft PU. This roller can be swivelled by a hydraulic cylinder (18) from a web cleaning position into a position where it contacts a roller cleaning device (14). A flexible porous cleansing pad (15) can be unwound from a roller (26) and rewound on a roller (28). This is advanced by a hydraulic cylinder (24). A cleaning fluid can be fed from a pipe (31) to a nozzle close to the pad.
