<p>An air spring (1) is formed by an axially spaced end cap (2) and a piston member (3) and has an intervening elastomeric flexible sleeve (8) extending therebetween which forms a fluid pressure chamber (18). An annular clamp ring (32) having a recess (33) on the inner diameter thereof coacts with a corresponding annular projection (21) formed on the end cap (2) to positionally locate the ring (32) on the end cap. A pair of clamping surfaces (19, 20) are located on opposite sides of the projection (21) and are separated therefrom by expansion grooves (23, 24). The annular projection (21) and clamping surfaces (19, 20) form a series of pinch areas with the intervening sleeve (8), which sealingly clamp the sleeve therebetween. The expansion grooves (23, 24) receive portions of the sleeve and change the direction of reinforcing cords (9) within the sleeve. The clamp ring (32) abuts against a radially extending surface (26) of the end cap to reduce axial movement of the ring (32) during operation of the air spring (1). An annular groove (28) which is formed in the end cap (2) traps and conceals the uncompressed end of the sleeve (8) which extends beyond the clamp ring (32) to increase the holding power of the clamp ring.</p> |
