PURPOSE:To obtain the objective compound in high yield in a short time while suppressing the by-production of polyalkylene glycol by reacting an alkylene carbonate with water in the presence of a composite catalyst composed of a Lewis acid and a nitrogen-containing organic base. CONSTITUTION:An alkylene glycol (e.g. ethylene glycol or propylene glycol) useful in the fields of fiber, film, unsaturated polyester resin, etc., can be produced in high yield without by-producing polyalkylene glycol while completing the reaction in a short time by reacting an alkylene carbonate (e.g. ethylene carbonate or propylene carbonate) with water at 20-200 deg.C in the presence of a composite catalyst consisting of a Lewis acid (e.g. ZnCl2, MgCI2 or ZnBr2) and a nitrogen-containing organic base (e.g. tri-n-butylamine, triethylamine or pyridine). The above catalyst has remarkably excellent catalytic activity compared with the separate use of each component. |
