The encoding method comprises the steps by receiving the picture signal and determining motion vectors relating to a motion in a picture of the picture signal. A selection signal is obtd. to select one operation mode out of a number of possible operation modes on the picture signal depending on the selection signal to obtain a picture signal to be encoded. The selection signal and the motion vectors are digitally encoded to obtain an assisting signal to inform a decoder which one of the operation modes has been selected and about the motion vectors. The picture signal to be encoded and the assisting signal is encoded to obtain the encoded picture signal. A film mode information signal is received indicating whether the picture signal originates from film. The selecting step further depends on the film mode information signal. The film mode information signal is digitally encoded, the assisting signal also comprising the film mode information signal to inform the decoder whether the picture signal originates from film.
