According to the process, in order to achieve a constant perimetral length in the rolling-up, in helical form, of a band 3 of planar material, in order to form a tube 1, the band 3 of material is provided with marks 4. Its distances a are determined beforehand on the basis of the desired perimetral length u and, at the time of rolling- up, any deviations from an alignment 6 parallel to the axis is converted into a corrected measurement. The device comprises a guide table 18 with a device 11 for the variable adjustment of the distance a between the marks 4, and a checking device 8 for emitting signals for detecting marks, in order to detect variations in the perimetral length u. <IMAGE>
