FUNCTIONAL DATABASE SYSTEM

A functional database system accessible by means of functional expressions. A functional expression in a database is evaluated by compiling the expression into a relational algebra expression in terms of an extended relational algebra and evaluating thecompiled expression by referring to data stored in the database. A function may be called during compilation or interpretation, and the compiler or interpreter may be called recursively as necessary to compile or evaluate the function. The extended relational algebra includes a database update operator, a foreign function operator and a sequence operator.
