PURPOSE: To remove foreign particles from the lubricant supplied to a hermetic compressor by forming an annular groove disposed circumferentially around a pick-up tube. CONSTITUTION: When a motor-compressor unit 12 is in operation, a drive shaft 18 is rotated to rotate a pick-up tube 34 in an oil pot 60. At that time, the lubricant in a lubricant sump 22 is pumped upward to lubricant passages 24, 26, 28 via an inlet port 44 and an axial hole 46 by the centrifugal force. The foreign particles 52 and other pollutants existing in the sump 22 are similarly pumped upward together with the lubricant via the axial hole 46 by the centrifugal force. When foreign particles 52 reach an annular recess 50, they are deposited in the recess 50 as they are heavier than the lubricant. When the drive shaft 18 is stopped, the foreign particles 52 fell down in the sump 22 simply because of gravity. The foreign particles 52 are further moved through the axial hole 46 into the passages 24, 26, 28 by the centrifugal force that drives the foreign particles 52 into the recess 50 so that it is possible to prevent the unit 12 from damaging or unnecessary wear.
