PURPOSE:To obtain an easy-to-see liquid crystal display device regardless of a transmission or reflection type, by putting a semitransparent reflecting plate, a polarizing plate and a background illuminating light source at the back of a display element into which a cholesteric liquid crystal containing a polychromatic coloring matter and having positive dielectric anisotropy is enclosed. CONSTITUTION:A cell is formed by setting a pair of electrode substrates which are opposite to each other with horizontal orientation treatment applied on the electrode surface of at least one of these substrates. Then a semitransparent reflecting plate 2, a plarizing plate 3, a color compensating filter 4 for lamp, a light diffusing plate 5, an illumination lamp 6 and a reflecting plate 7 are set at the back of a display element 1 into which the cholesteric liquid crystal containing a polychromatic coloring matter and having positive dielectric anisotropy is enclosed within the above-mentioned cell. |
