A light reflector type encoder includes a rotatable disc (20) coupled to the subject under detection, by shaft (22). The disc has on its surface a large number of light transmittable graduations (24) provided at a uniform, highly accurate, pitch and radius. Graduations (24) are slits which allow light to pass through and thereby present a much different degree of reflectivity than the remaining surface of the disc (20). A fixed optical lattice (26) of the same diameter as disc (20), is positioned relative to end face (30A) of optical fibre (30). Within optical lattice (26) the number of graduations (slits) (28) is determined in relation to the light emitting area of optical fibre (30) which not only emits the light from a source within the processing unit (32).
