Method and apparatus for machining workpieces of long-chip material

In order to provide a method of machining workpieces of long-chip material, in which, by means of a tool moving in a direction relative to the workpiece, stock removal is effected at a predetermined depth in an area of the workpiece by removing a chip, and in order to create an apparatus for carrying out the method, the method and the apparatus ensuring breaking of the chips with great certainty and reliability and in addition only involving very little outlay, it is proposed that, before the removal of the chip, the area be provided with a linear structural change which runs essentially transversely to the direction of the relative movement of workpiece and tool and the penetration depth of which is smaller than the depth of the stock removal.
