The invention relates to a device for converting a linear motion into a rotary motion by the use of a pressure medium. The device consists of a pressure cylinder arranged in a main housing and provided with inlet and outlet openings for the pressure medium. In this pressure cylinder, a rack can be moved in linear fashion by means of a piston rod. Engaging with this rack is a pinion which is coupled to an output shaft. According to the invention, the pressure cylinder is designed as a multi-stage constructional unit with at least two independent cylinder bores arranged in series with one another. Each of these cylinder bores has its own pressure piston. The pressure piston of the first stage is articulated on the free end of the piston rod mounted in a fixed manner on the main housing. The pressure piston of the following stage is connected in a pressure-resistant manner to the free end of the linearly movable rack, the end remote from the pinion.
