Cationic polyelectrolyte polymers containing quaternary amine groups and soluble or dispersible in aqueous alkali solutions are used to inhibit oxidation of sulfites to sulfates in such solutions used for or obtained by scrubbing sulfur dioxide from gas streams. Suitably, the polymers have a molecular weight of at least 10,000 daltons and are present at 1 to 3000 ppm.
