The invention relates to a herbicidal composition which comprises (S)-1'-methoxycarbonylethyl 2-bromo-5-(2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)benzoate or (S)-1'-ethoxycarbonylethyl 2-bromo-5-(2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)benzoate as active component at a concentration of 0.01 to 95.0 % by weight, with one or a number of solid and/or liquid supports, preferably ground natural or synthetic materials, and/or with one or a number of inert solvents, preferably xylene and/or cyclohexanone, and optionally with one or more surface-active agents, preferably anionic and/or nonionic emulsifying or dispersing agents. The invention moreover relates to the two above compounds and to a process for preparing them. The compounds according to the invention have a notable herbicidal effect (more than 90 %) and advantageous selectivity threshold values with respect to cultivated plants.
