The present invention relates to a safety device having the object of powering the rear lights of a land-based motor vehicle as soon as its heat engine enters a deceleration mode, thus generating a signal for the benefit of other vehicles. The device is composed of a box 1 powered by the accumulator battery 2 of the vehicle. The parameters taken into consideration for entering the deceleration mode are: the load of the heat engine 3, the speed of the heat engine 4, the position of the gas control 5, and the activation of the power transmission 6. A decision stage 7 activates, via the output 8 from the box, the powering of the signalling lights 9. The device is particularly intended to power the brake lights of a vehicle during its deceleration generated by the heat engine in its resistive phase. Its modular structure allows it to be used on any land-based motor vehicle with a heat engine. <IMAGE>
