Waste materials of many types, e.g. plastic, old tyres, wooden and cardboard crates are reduced to pieces about 30-50 mm size, esp. by rotary wheels and then stored, possibly with waste paint and sewage sludge, before delivery to a fluidised bed furnace. The bed is fine-grained sand, maintained at about 500-700 deg. C by low-oxygen hot gas. Suitable gases include fumes collected from the combustion stage and mixed with combustion gases from a separate burner, or with the exhaust gases of an IC engine. The furnace is divided by a vertical partition into two sections, pref. operated at different temps., but with sand circulating between the sections via an overflow or through a base connector. ADVANTAGE - Plant with low atmos. emission has high and economical refuse incineration capacity, and can be installed in small area remote from source of refuse.
