SUPERFINE MAGNETIC PARTICLES OF EPSILON' IRON CARBIDE AND ITS PRODUCTION

PURPOSE:To obtain ultrafine magnetic particles of epsilon' iron carbide of excellent magnetic properties in which the particle size of the product is only dependent on the particle size of the stating substance, by allowing alpha-Fe of a specific particle size to contact and react with a reductive carbonization agent including carbon at lower temperature. CONSTITUTION:A reductive carbonization agent containing carbon or a mixture thereof with a reducing agent free from carbon is prepared. The reductive carbonization agent or the mixture is allowed to contact and react with alpha-Fe of 0.01 to 0.2mum average particle size at a low temperature of <=250 deg.C whereby ultrafine magnetic particles of epsilon'-iron carbide given by the formula: epsilon'-Fe2.2C, of 0.01 to 0.2mum average particle size.
