A process for preparing a compound of the formula: <CHEM> in which: R is alkyl having a plurality of fluorines; R<1> is hydrogen, alkyl, halogen or optionally substituted phenyl; and R<2> is hydrogen or alkyl comprising either; (a) reacting a compound of formula <CHEM> in which R<1> is hydrogen, alkyl or optionally substituted phenyl, with hydroxylamine or a salt thereof or hydroxyurea; or (b) reacting a compound of formula <CHEM> wherein R<1> is as defined above, with hydroxylamine or a salt thereof or hydroxyurea; or (c) reacting a compound of formula <CHEM> wherein R is as defined above, with a compound of the formula RCO2R<3> (V), wherein R<3> is alkyl; or (d) halogenating a compound of the formula: <CHEM> wherein R and R<2> are as defined above. m
