PURPOSE:To obtain the title favorable spherical protoplast useful for protoplast fusion by treating a bacterial suspension of Bifidobacterium longum in the presence of, as cell-wall digesting enzyme, a combination of lysozyme and actinase E. CONSTITUTION:A bacterial suspension of Bifidobacterium longum [e.g. Bifidobacterium longum SBT 2933-R (FERM-8743)] is treated either in the presence of, as cell-wall digesting enzyme, a combination of lysozyme and actinase E or proteinase K, or treated with lysozyme followed by actinase E or proteinase K, thus obtaining the objective protoplast. The latter treatment process is preferable because of being better in respect of protoplast fusion. |
