A SiC cylinder is formed e.g. in Acheson furnace by heating from central portion of mixt. of sources of Si, C and ferromagnetic (FM) element such taht the last migrates as result of temp. gradient from inner to outer portion. The cooled cylinder is crushed to pass 6 mesh and a fraction sepd. magnetically to leave high grade fraction. The mix contains silica sand, powdered coke of coal and FM (which can be contd. in the sand, or is pariculate Fe, Ni Co metal cpds. alloys or mixts. thereof, Fe/Si alloy, or is derived from red mud).
