This varier comprises two elements - respectively a driving element and a driven element - mounted so that they can rotate about two parallel axes, one of which is capable of being moved with respect to the other. One 4 of these elements is provided with a ratchet wheel 17, whereas the other 2 carries a series of pawls 16 intended, each in turn, to come into engagement with this wheel. Each of these pawls 16 is articulated on a pin 18 itself mounted so that it can slide in a radial groove or slot 19 in the corresponding element 2 of the varier. In addition, each pawl is guided on a circular track 24 provided on the other element 4 of the varier. Thus, a movement of the spindle of one of the elements of the varier with respect to the spindle of the other gives rise to radial movements of the pawls 16 with respect to the spindle of the element carrying them. This makes it possible to obtain a continuous variation in the transmission ratio. This speed varier may form the object of numerous applications. Thus, it may equip the rear wheel of a cycle. <IMAGE>
