The invention lies in a highly efficient coding apparatus configured to break a digital picture signal into picture blocks (5) and, in receipt of a signal from a coding circuit (6) for performing variable-length coding for each picture block, generate an output signal whose sync blocks are serial. By inserting the most significant bit of a coding output signal for each picture element in a predetermined position of the sync block, a reproduced picture is obtained also in the picture search mode in which the head scans a tape across a plurality of tracks.
