PURPOSE:To provide an epoxy compound and an alcohol in a state capable of readily controlling their production ratio by bringing a lower olefin into contact with an organic hydroperoxide in the presence of a catalyst comprising the compound of a metal selected from Ru and Os and a Mo compound. CONSTITUTION:When a lower olefin is reacted with an organic hydroperoxide to prepare an epoxide compound, a catalyst (e.g. a catalyst comprising molybdenum naphthenate and ruthenium acetylacetate) comprising the compound of at least one of ruthenium and osmium metals and a molybdenum compound is used as a catalyst for the reaction. In the method, the organic hydroperoxide can be converted into an alcohol in a high selectivity and the production ratio of the epoxy compound and the alcohol can be controlled by reducing the selectivity of the epoxy compound. The epoxy compound is useful as an antifreeze solution, a surfactant, a raw material for cosmetics, a stabilizer for halogenated hydrocarbons, etc. |
