A portable rail welder (10) comprises two pairs of pincer clamps (12) and a rectangular elongate main support spine (14). Each pair of clamps (12) is mounted on a pivot pin (41) which is mounted on the spine (14) so that the pivot axes are below the spine (14). A top beam (15) carries a hoist eye and is supported at either end above and from the spine (14) to form a rectangular frame (11). Arms (21 and 22) in pairs at either end of the spine (14) carry ground engaging jacks (25, 26) whereby the frame (11) can be supported on the ground. The position of the pivot pin (41) relative to the spine (14) and the other pivot pin can be adjusted laterally, vertically and/or horizontally by wedge adjustor arrangements. Each pair of clamps (12) is provided with an alignment stop which is fixed relative to the spine (14) and which locates the crown of a rail length clamped by that pair of claim (12). Symmetry of each pair of clamps (12) about the plane that includes their pivot axes and the longitudinal axis of the spine (14) is maintained by a pair of links (153) and a slider (148). The spine (14) serves as a monorail support for mechanical handling equipment operable to translate a pair of L-shaped upset removal tools from a storage location, where they are spaced from the weld location, to the welded rail and to assemble those tools around the rail as a continuous frame to remove weld upset. <IMAGE> |
