The dust sensor is arranged to be adjustable in sensitivity in accordance with a signal from the external. Also included is a discrimination device (10) for detecting the kind of an object to be cleaned by the vacuum cleaner to generate a discrimination signal indicative of the kind of the object. The discrimination signal is supplied to the dust sensor to adjust the sensitivity thereof in accordance with the kind of the object.
