In order to reduce the loss of data packets, it is known to provide buffer stores, priority circuits and devices for traffic measurement. All this must be present in each switching stage, in most cases once per input line. It is intended to reduce this high expenditure within the switching network. According to the invention, the incoming packet streams are converted into synchronous time-division multiplex data streams with fixed association between time channels and individual connections. Switching can then be effected in synchronous time-division multiplex techniques. The switching network is of simpler construction but must be slightly overdimensioned.
