The invention relates to a filter press having a multiplicity of membrane filter plates which is provided with a base plate having an elevated outer rim enclosing a recess in which is provided a surrounding groove for the reception of a correspondingly surrounding rib of an elastic membrane abutting the base plate, filter cloths being inserted between each two membranes adjacent in the plate package and on tightening the plate package between a stationary headpiece and an axially movable end piece the closing pressure is transmitted via the planar rim surfaces of the outer rim and the filter cloths inserted between them, and in the region of the recess between membrane and base plate a pressure chamber being provided in each case each of which is connected via a connection line to a manifold which itself is equipped with a valve provided at any rate for the discharge of compressed air. According to the invention, a mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and/or electrical coupling is provided between the movable end piece or another press part, e.g. membrane filter plates adjacent to the head piece or the piston of a cylinder of the tightening device, movable as a result of the motion of the end piece, and the valve in such a way that when the movable end piece is moved up, the valve is positively actuated.
