PURPOSE:To increase the contrast and to improve the display quality by selecting the polarizing direction of each polarizing member, the orienting directions of a liquid crystal element for display and a liquid crystal element for optical compensation, and the extent of twisting of each liquid crystal layer so that light is cut off in the absence of a driving signal between electrodes of the liquid crystal element for display. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal cell 1 for display has twisted nematic liquid crystal layer 7 between a display electrode substrate 5 and an opposite substrate 6, picture element electrodes 9 and switch elements are arrayed on a transparent insulation substrate 8 in a matrix, and an orienting film 10a is formed further thereupon. In this case, the polarizing direction of each polarizing member, the orienting directions of the display liquid crystal element 1 and optical compensating liquid crystal element 2, and the extent of twisting of each liquid crystal layer are so selected that light is cut off unless the driving signal is applied between the electrodes of the display liquid crystal element 1. Therefore, when the driving signal is not applied, the light which is transmitted through the display liquid crystal element is cut off completely. Thus, the contrast is increased and the display quality is improved. |
