The machine according to the invention is characterised in that it comprises a vertical hopper 1 arranged to contain several superimposed loaves P and provided with a lower front opening O the height of which is greater than the thickness of a loaf P but less than twice the thickness of a loaf P, a conveyor means 2 provided with at least one projection 3 for entraining the loaf P and arranged so that the bottom of the said hopper 1 level with the lower edge S of the said opening O, a stop BR arranged in front of the said opening O in the direction of forward travel D of the conveyor device 2, a cutting tool arranged to pivot between the said stop BR and the said opening O about an axis which is parallel to the direction of forward travel D of the conveyor device 2, the conveyor device 2 being entrained by a motor by means of a friction coupling device, the said cutting tool being entrained by a gear motor.
