Boehmite is in general of gelatinous nature if the suspension is prepared in aqueous medium, and is thus no longer utilisable for many applications. According to the novel process, finely divided boehmite is to be prepared from relatively inexpensive coarse Al(OH)3 particles which can easily be converted into aqueous dispersions which do not form a gel on standing. In this process, coarse-grain Al(OH)3 is heated to a temperature above 350 DEG C, and the activated material is treated with heated alkaline or acidic solution in order to liberate finely divided boehmite. The product has a specific surface area of 30-70 m<2>/g, a particle size of 0.02-50 mu m and an Na2O content of 0.01-0.10% by weight and can be easily dispersed in aqueous medium. The resulting suspensions are stable and do not gel. Boehmite particles are used in the ceramics, fireproofing, paper and textile industry. <IMAGE> |
